One of Summer’s Most Unique Events Is Racing Back to Camano Island

Every June, the sound of cheering crowds, rolling wheels, and community pride fills the air at Arrowhead Ranch on Camano Island. The Stanwood-Camano Island Soap Box Derby has grown into something truly special—earning recognition as the largest local Soap Box Derby race in the world as of 2025.

Taking place on June 20, the annual event brings together nearly 80 young racers ages 7 to 19 who spend weeks building, practicing, and preparing their official Soap Box Derby cars before competing for a chance to advance to the prestigious All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship in Akron, Ohio.

But this event is about far more than racing.

Throughout the season, drivers work alongside a parent, grandparent, mentor, or car handler to build their cars, attend clinics, practice on the track, and learn valuable life skills along the way. Participants develop teamwork, communication, sportsmanship, problem-solving abilities, and the confidence that comes from creating something with their own hands.

According to Marla Heagle, co-owner of Arrowhead Ranch, the event’s appeal extends well beyond the racers themselves.

This is the perfect event for multi-generational travel,” says Heagle. “It’s nostalgic for grandparents, while parents get to watch their children experience something enriching, educational, and exciting.

Visitors attending race weekend can expect much more than the competition itself. Arrowhead Ranch’s state-of-the-art 1,000-foot track provides thrilling races throughout the day, while families can enjoy food trucks, activities, and opportunities to explore the beautiful ranch property.

We’re proud because this is the largest Soap Box Derby outside of the World Championship in Akron, Ohio,” says Heagle. “We’ll have about 80 racers competing this year, along with food trucks, activities, self-guided walking tours around the ranch, and plenty of opportunities for families to spend the day together.

The event has become a beloved tradition that draws visitors from throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond, while still maintaining the small-town spirit that makes Camano Island so special.

This is an event that not only has a large reach, but still feels like a hometown gathering,” Heagle explains. “It brings together all of the islands in Island County and creates a real sense of unity and pride as people travel from all over to experience it.”

Whether you’re cheering on a young racer, reliving childhood memories, or simply looking for a unique family-friendly summer event, the Stanwood-Camano Island Soap Box Derby offers an unforgettable day of competition, community, and island hospitality.
